REBELATION is een 10-koppige ska band
uit Kings Lynn in Engeland. Ze maken een heerlijke mix
van Authentic Ska en Rootsy Reggae. De sound wordt geaccentueerd
door mannelijke en vrouwelijke vocalen vol soul en een
sterke blazerssectie.
Andere invloeden van Rebelation (dat oorspronkelijk
als een 4-mans formatie begon!) zijn The Clash. The
Specials en The Beat. Ook Engelse dub-reggae and
bands als The Skatalites hebben hun sporen nagelaten.
The jamaicaanse invloeden zijn duidelijk terug te
vinden in Rebelation, toch is de band zeker geen
retro of revival band te noemen maar maakt moderne
en progressieve reggae.
The band zet al jaren zalen door de hele UK op zijn
kop en is ook in het Nederlandse en Belgische Club
en festivalcircuit geen onbekende. De laatste jaren
hebben ze op het podium gestaan met namen zoals Bad
Manners, The Selecter, Mark Foggo, Snuff, Asian Dub
Foundation, Soulwax, Laurel Aitken en Zion train om
er maar een paar te noemen.
In Oktober 2005 is een nieuwe full-lenght cd uitgekomen
op het Engelse Do The Dog label.
Rebelation are a 10 piece band based in Kings Lynn,
England that play a smooth brand of authentic Ska and
rootsy reggae. Their sound is highlighted by a powerful
horn section & soulful dual male & female vocalists.
Rebelation were formed as a 4 piece outfit in late 1994
and their initial sound was heavily influenced by the
likes of The Clash, Specials & The Beat, plus Jah
Shaka and the other big English dub reggae sound systems
of the time.
Through the passage of time and with many
line up 'developments,' the sound is more refined and
is more authentic. Their traditional Ska is influenced
by the Skatalites and the like. The reggae and rocksteady
is influenced by the studio 1 stable of the late sixties/early
seventies. That said, the influence of the modern Jamaican
sound is present and Rebelation do not consider themselves
as a revival or retro band but as a modernist and progressor
of the reggae sound.
After gigging locally around East Anglia for 6 months
they began playing shows further afield and have been
mashing up venues all across the UK ever since. Rebelation
has graced the stages of many events on the UK festival
scene, including Greenbelt in 1995 and Strawberry Fayre
in 2002 (where they headlined the reggae stage).
In 1998
they crossed the Channel to tour through Belgium & Holland
for the first time. They quickly established large followings
in both countries and continue to play regular Belgian & Dutch
club and festival dates. They have played along side
bands such as Bad Manners, The Selecter, Mark Foggo,
Snuff, Asian Dub Foundation, Soulwax, Laurel Aitken and
Zion Train to name but a few.
